Linear: Workflow States

Linear issues move through workflow states that each team defines, for example Backlog → Todo → In Progress → Done. Git-Zen reads each team’s states from Linear.

Linear gives every workflow state one of these types:

State type Typical state
Backlog Backlog
Unstarted Todo
Started In Progress
Completed Done
Canceled Canceled

Git-Zen treats a move into a completed or canceled state as “closed”. When that happens, Git-Zen can add tags to the Zendesk ticket and solve the ticket.

The Status list on the create form shows every workflow state of the selected team. If you leave it blank, Linear uses the team’s default state.

An administrator controls whether the Status field is visible and required. See Settings and options.

Change the state in Linear. The Git-Zen sidebar cannot change the state of an issue that is already linked.

When an issue moves to a new state, Git-Zen adds a comment to each linked ticket, for example Issue state changed to Done. The sidebar shows the new state on the issue row.

Git-Zen does not create, change, or delete workflow states. Use Team settings → Workflow in Linear. Git-Zen caches team data for a short time. If a new state does not appear, wait a few minutes, then refresh the Zendesk browser tab.
